Raging Deathbringer

Our very first Onyxia-25 run and the Raging Deathbringer dropped. I wasn't sure about this weapon so I waited for it to go to rolls thinking that if I won I'd run some sims with it. And I won. I can't seem to win a Kodo mount on my Druid... but I can win what looks like a crappy axe. But hey I put the axe to work for the greater good of all Enhance-kind.

After 16:25 minutes of swinging on the boss level target dummy in Darnassus I got 33 procs. That comes out to a 2 PPM. The Shadow Bolt damage did not scale with spell power because the average damage was 1724, which is on the high end of the 1458-1874 range, but by no means amplified by spell power.

Since the damage is shadow the crits aren't affected by Elemental Fury and the average crit damage for that run was only about 2350. I also only got 21% crits during that time, which is roughly around my unbuffed spell crit (25%) in raid gear with Raging Deathbringer equipped as my only weapon.

To calculate RD's place in our arsenal let's assume a raid spell crit of 35%, and an average Shadow Bolt spell damage of 1,666. The calculation is pretty simple:

(Base_dmg * (1 - Crit%)) * (Base_dmg * 1.5 * Crit%)
(1666 * (1- .35)) * (1666 * 1.5 * .35) = 1958 average damage per proc

Considering this can only happen once every 30 seconds the DPS increase is

1958 / 30 = 65.25

At first I was thinking I would add 65.25 to the weapon's base DPS and run sims but that won't work because other spells are affected by weapon damage, such as Stormstrike and Lava Lash. Instead the calculation when comparing Raging Deathbringer vs your current weapon is to sim out both scenarios then add 65.25 DPS to the final number where RD is used.

I have not simmed this out yet to see where it would fall for Enhancement Shamans but just plugging it into my gear spreadsheet (I need to update the one I upload to Google docs, sorry!) it falls just below Angry Dread before taking the additional 65ish DPS into account.

The complete lack of all other stats makes this weapon an anemic choice compared to the myriad of options we have available to raiders. However, if you are wielding something from Naxx10 or lower then by all means get your hands on this axe and enjoy your Shadow Bolts!

As for me, maybe I'll win a Tankard O' Terror and dual wield with my Raging Deathbringer.

May all your hits be crits!

I had possibly thought that even with the missing yummy stats (exp/hit/ap) on the weapon I thought the 2.7 speed might help it catch up a little to the other equivalent 2.6 weapons out there... but it seems like that may not be the case?

That's disappointing... but it's heartening to know that I don't have to replace my newly won Facebreaker!

As far as I know, it's not 2PPM but a 5% chance to proc. I've heard reports of a triple proc on windfury before. It makes it much, much harder to model. >.<

Discussions over on EJ are actually showing this to be a PPM mechanic, as the proc rate seems to go down as you add more haste - more white swings/minute but same amount of procs.

But yeah, there is no internal cd on that proc and it can triple proc on windfury.
